Mary Ann Coyan was born on June 11, 1849, the only daughter of William James and Elizabeth (Jackson) Coyan, and the sister of my gg-grandfather. In the spring of 1863, she left Jackson, Ohio, with her parents and relocated to Wapello county, Iowa. On November 15, 1866, at the age of 17, she married Jacob Garrett in Ottumwa, Iowa at the home of John Potter. They were the parents of - get this - SEVENTEEN children! Those children (stillborns omitted) were:

According to family members that I spoke to in May 1999 in Taylor Co., Iowa, the stillborn children of Jacob and Mary Ann are buried on the plot where the parents are buried in Holt Cemetary, Gravity, Iowa.  Jacob's obit seems to hint that also.
